CU Boulder officially adopted "Air Force Blue" as a primary uniform color in May 1981, replacing black to represent "the deep blue of Colorado's sky at 9,000 feet". This unpopular "sky blue" and gold era lasted until 1984, when the blue was darkened before the team returned to traditional black and gold by 1985.
