What is Barkcloth?
Cotton barkcloth is a thick, soft, textured fabric made from densely woven cotton fibers. It’s named for its rough surface, which resembles tree bark. Barkcloth is more substantial than standard cotton fabric and can have a rich look and feel. It’s often used for home furnishings like upholstery, slipcovers, curtains, and drapery, but can also be used for apparel like shirts, dresses, and shorts. Barkcloth is durable and can be as strong as fabric purchased today if stored properly. Hawaiian barkcloth is made using a heavyweight weave and a double twisted yarn called “Bark Kahala” that gives the fabric a textured feel.
